Lectures on Chinese Law in Europe

11 July 2011

During his recent trip to Europe, R&P managing director Maarten Roos spoke at two events. On 24 May 2011, he lectured in Antwerp at an event organized by Belgium’s biggest payroll provider SD Worx. Maarten spoke on legal and tax issues relating to the employment of Chinese and expatriate workers in China, and on the legal structures available to foreign businesses that want to open a Chinese office. Responding upon questions in the audience, special attention was given to the new rules for representative offices, and the advantages of replacing a representative office with a wholly foreign-owned enterprise.

On 27 May, the Rotterdam School of Management and the Law Faculty of the Erasmus University invited Maarten to hold a seminar on a topic of interest. The participants chose intellectual property (IP) protection in China, and Maarten went on to explain the ins and outs of acquiring, protecting and enforcing trademarks, patents, copyright, domain names and trade secrets. In the discussions Maarten took a very practical perspective, introducing the importance of IP protection as part of a company’s strategy for investing in or sourcing from China.

Maarten Roos has been voted as one of Asialaw’s Leading Lawyers since 2008, authored “Chinese Commercial Law: A Practical Guide” in 2010, and frequently lectures on Chinese laws and legal practice. If you are interested to invite Maarten as a speaker, please email to [email protected].
